No compensation for 100-year-old PoW Fred Collett - hero misses out

FRED Collett is a true-blue Australian war hero but the Federal Government has turned its back on the 100-year-old World War II Digger in his moment of need.

Mr Collett escaped the clutches of the Germans in a rickety old wooden dinghy at the height of the war, dodging bombs at sea for three weeks to warn fellow soldiers of the enemy advance.

But 69 years after his daring escape from a PoW camp in Greece to the island of Crete in April 1941, the Federal Government has told the ailing war hero "you're not eligible" for compensation.

Mr Collett believes the Government wants him to "hurry up and drop dead" in his rundown shack at Mount Ossa, north of Mackay, after the Department of Veterans' Affairs "controversially" knocked back his claim for a one-off $25,000 payment for being a PoW in Europe.

Its very hard to fathom a government who will gleefully spend hundreds of millions of dollars investing in the suffering and misery of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars but miserly and scrooge like, will deny a 100 year old man a pittance. All I can say is Governments only think in dollar terms and votes NOT in human values and they will only shit on you as soon as you turn your back.

Obama orders hospital visitation rights for gays, lesbians

Washington (CNN) -- President Obama has asked the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a rule that would prevent US hospitals from denying visitation privileges to gay and lesbian partners.

The president's Thursday memo said, "There are few moments in our lives that call for greater compassion and companionship than when a loved one is admitted to the hospital. ... Yet every day, all across America, patients are denied the kindnesses and caring of a loved one at their sides."

Gay and lesbian Americans are "uniquely affected" by relatives-only policies at hospitals, Obama said, adding that they "are often barred from the bedsides of the partners with whom they may have spent decades of their lives -- unable to be there for the person they love, and unable to act as a legal surrogate if their partner is incapacitated."

It was about time something was done about the archaic, cruel and barbaric rule barring same sex partners from hospital visitation rights.

I would simply ask anyone who disagrees with this new policy, what would you feel if you were barred from visiting your lifelong partner?

Huckabee likens gay marriage to incest, polygamy

WASHINGTON — Mike Huckabee, a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2012, says the effort to allow gays and lesbians to marry is comparable to legalizing incest, polygamy and drug use.

Huckabee also told college journalists last week that gay couples should not be permitted to adopt. "Children are not puppies," he said.

And this moron is going to be a 2012 Presidential candidate? God help America!

Bosses held party while Queensland Health staff went without pay

This is fucking outrageous!

THE introduction of Queensland Health's payroll system was celebrated with a roof-top party while thousands of staff went without their fortnightly pay.

Senior executives and bureaucrats involved in the $40 million project were treated to beers, cheese platters and a barbecue just days after the troubled payroll system went live.

And this is the most outrageous and egregious part of the whole shameful debacle.

Staff at the state's biggest hospital who may have missed out on pay were offered phone numbers for charities.

That's fucking big of them. I wonder whether next time I have to pay a hospital bill they would accept a few charity phone numbers in lieu of payment.

An absolute disgusting state of affairs. Heads should roll.

Queensland Health staff offered free coffee in wake of payroll debacle

ONE free cup of coffee. That's what some Queensland Health staff have been offered as an apology for the continuing pay debacle.

Deputy Premier Paul Lucas said, "There are still staff presenting with little or no pay. But there is significant progress".

This is still a disgusting state of affairs and nothing anyone involved should be proud of.

Deputy Premier Paul Lucas's blast to bureaucrats over Queensland Health payroll debacle broadcast to The Sunday Mail.

The Sunday Mail was an unwitting third party to the conversation between Mr Lucas, senior bureaucrats and office staff.

One of the group accidentally hit a Sunday Mail Journalists telephone number on their mobile phone and did not notice.

The phone blooper shows Deputy Premier Paul Lucas at his wit's end trying to fix the embarrassing Queensland Health pay bungle.

I wonder if those involved are still partying at their wonderful achievment?

Queensland Health payroll debacle spreads with overpayments deducted illegally

The Industrial Relations Commission last night heard that the much-maligned health payroll system was deducting overpayments from workers' bank accounts without consent and the protocol was widespread through other government departments.

Golden Circle Cheats Consumers

The Brisbane-based company has been selling products marked "proudly Australian owned" more than a year after it was bought by US food giant Heinz.

Heinz spokeswoman Jessica Ramsden has laid the blame on the sheer size of the company's output. Further saying, "We had over 400 products to relabel since acquiring Golden Circle late in 2008 and it's just simply taken much longer than we anticipated to complete this process."

I am sure that the Australian executives at Golden Circle knew fully well that their products were labeled 'Australian Owned' and therefore participated in deceptive conduct while selling their product as Australian owned while Golden Circle was owned by parent company Heinz.

So I do not accept the explanation given by the Heinz representative.

Sole Carer of 92 Year Old Mother Deported From Australia

Edward Joseph, sole carer of mum Irene, 92, told to leave Australia

A DOTING son who refuses to put his mum in a nursing home has been forced out of Australia.

The SRI Lankan man, who was to have been deported from Australia despite being the sole career of his elderly mother, has now left the country voluntarily and is understood to have taken his mother with him.

The shameful Australian Immigration Department said that his mother had other children living in Australia that could have cared for her. If that is the case then whey didn't they take up the careing role for her? He and his mother have left the country, doesn't that tell the immigration something about the family dynamics?

This is a disgusting set of affairs and only serves to highlight how heartless the Australian Immigration Department is. The department is run by cold blooded bureaucrats.
